The common first step will be a dating scan between weeks as we like to check your baby before 10 weeks. Before 7 weeks it may be too early to acquire this information. To obtain the best images possible, this scan is routinely performed internally and perfectly safe to perform during early pregnancy. At 7 weeks gestation a pregnancy sac should be seen within the uterus. Within this sac will be an embryo, heart motion and yolk sac should be visible. Approaching 8 weeks, early brain formation is identified with a black space in the head called the rhombencephalon. Sometimes it may be too early to gather all the information required to confirm the stage of your pregnancy. In this situation you may be required to return for a repeat ultrasound in days. Your doctor will inform you of the most appropriate time frame to return for this scan if required.

There are a few different times in the pregnancy that you may have an ultrasound. At different times in the pregnancy we are looking for different things. Here is a quick summary of the ultrasounds you may have. Not everyone needs all of these scans and some people need many more, this is a guide only.

This is usually done between 6 and 10 weeks or at your first visit, if that happens to be later. We first look to see that the fetal heart is beating that is, that the fetus is alive and then have a careful look within the uterus to see how many fetuses there are that is, is this a multiple pregnancy. The next step is to measure the fetus to see if your period dates are correct.

Measurements at this early stage are very accurate and are generally considered to be more accurate than your period dates, even if you have a regular cycle.

Ultrasound is a type of diagnostic medical imaging system which uses sound waves above the threshold of hearing to capture live images from within your body. It is painless and used in most soft tissue areas of the body. It is most well-known for its use in pregnancy. Your doctor, midwife or physio will refer you to have an ultrasound scan to help with the diagnosis of a condition or to assess your baby during pregnancy. A sonographer is a medical professional who performs the scan and a radiologist is a doctor who specialises in reporting the scan findings.

Obstetric Ultrasound

Trans abdominal ultrasound scan. Some warm gel is applied to your lower abdomen and a probe is used to transmit ultrasound images to the screen for interpretation. A trans-vaginal internal scan may also be required to fully assess your pregnancy. You will be asked to empty your bladder and a probe will be inserted into the vagina as far as a tampon. This additional technique can give extra information which may be critical in assessing the well-being of your pregnancy.

This scan is to confirm your due date and the well-being of your baby. Be confident that We cannot scan you without the referral from you doctor or midwife.

Back to Your pregnancy and baby guide. All pregnant women in England are offered an ultrasound scan at around 8 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is called the dating scan.
